Axiom 2nd Annual Golf Tourney Benefits Homeless Vets
October 7, 2003
Falls Church, Virginia. On a brisk, sun-drenched autumn morning, 110 Axiom employees, officers, clients, and supporters gathered at Ft. Belvoir's scenic golf course clubhouse to launch the company's second annual charity golf tournament. This year's event raised more than ten thousand dollars to support the United States Veterans Initiative, an innovative project providing shelter, job training, and job placement services for homeless veterans.
"The Axiom family can't think of any cause nobler than helping those of our nation's veterans who need our help," said Axiom founder and president, Ben Hankins. "The US Veterans Initiative provides life-enhancing services to America's veterans, full time, year round, across the country. They deserve this recognition and our support."
Founded in 1993, the U.S. Veterans Initiative represents a dynamic new model in philanthropy. Working with more than 40 local community organizations, the Initiative provides outreach to homeless veterans, provides special care to veterans with dependent children, and veterans with disabilities. It also offers transitional housing, training programs, and job placement services in major metropolitan areas throughout the country.
The day of golf and camaraderie, funded by registration fees, corporate sponsorships, and "priced-to-sell" mulligans, helped Axiom raise $10,154 for the Initiative. Mr. Hankins smiled as he handed the check to Mr. Tim Cantwell, Managing Partner of US VETS, and Ms. Nanci Jewell, DC Metro Director of the US VETS Ignatia House at the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
"The US VETS depends heavily on the financial support of civic-minded companies and communities throughout the country," said Mr. Cantwell. "The fellowship we share today will help local veterans and the national project continue our mission. The men and women we support answered their nation's call. The men and women who have gathered here today have heard their call, and answered. Thank you, Ben, and my deepest thanks to all these many friends of Axiom who have made this possible."
Axiom and its divisions have a long history providing program management services to the Department of Veterans Affairs. "Many of our staff consultants have spent many years helping manage veterans health and benefit programs," said Axiom Executive Vice-President Kevin Riley. "It's impossible to overstate the vital contribution that U.S. VETS is making to the welfare of those who risked their lives wearing the uniform of our country."
Active in the D.C. metropolitan area since 1997, the local U.S. Veterans Initiative project is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home on North Capitol Street and is managed by Ms. Nanci Jewell.
