Accommodations Program Recognized

July 17, 2002

Falls Church, Virginia - The Defense Department's Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) received a national award for its successful efforts to provide people with disabilities broader access to computer networks, the Internet, and other electronic equipment that are essential to the function of modern offices. The Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) conferred on CAP its Distinguished Contribution to Assistive Technology Award. The award was announced June 30th of this year at RESNA's annual International Conference on Technology and Disability in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Founded in 1979, RESNA is a non-profit organization uniting several professions that share a central focus on improving the potential of people with disabilities, including rehabilitation technology researchers and engineers, occupational therapists, prosthetists, speech language pathologists/audiologists, manufacturers, end-users, and policy specialists. More than 1,600 individuals and 150 organizations are members.

CAP is the federal government's only centrally funded accommodations program. DoD and federal employees with hearing, visual, dexterity, cognitive, and communications disabilities have relied on CAP for the assistive technologies they require to enjoy unfettered access to information resources and progressive employment opportunities. In fiscal year 2001, CAP provided a total of 4,463 accommodations. Since its creation in 1990, CAP has provided more than 29,000 accommodations to the DoD and more than 47 partner agencies.

Axiom Resource Management is CAP's sole private contractor providing the program with managerial, technical, and administrative support. "We're proud to have contributed to this exemplary program," said Frank Cumberland, Axiom's Vice-President for Communications, Marketing, and Strategic Planning. "And we intend to continue working to eliminate the technological barriers that constrain the potential of people with disabilities."

Axiom Resource Management, Inc. is headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia with branch offices in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Georgia, and Colorado.
