Mike Thornton Joins Axiom as CITPO Task Manager

July 1, 2003

Falls Church, Virginia. Mike Thornton, a U.S. Air Force career officer who has held executive-level positions in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General, will be Axiom's new task manager for the Clinical Information Technology Program Office (CITPO) support team. Thornton brings more than 24 years of experience in Military Health System (MHS) information technology (IT), expertise in clinical informatics, as well as a reputation for outstanding leadership.

"He's a rare commodity: both a pioneer in building today's systems, and a visionary in building tomorrow's," said Doug Peardon, Axiom's chief operating officer.

"Bringing Mike onboard is a definite win for CITPO and for Axiom," added Frank Lee, Axiom's vice president and CITPO program manager.

In his new role in the acquisition office for centrally-managed MHS clinical information systems, Thornton will be responsible for leading a staff of nearly 80 Axiom personnel in providing continuous, high-quality client service. Axiom provides CITPO with program management, finance, acquisition, logistics, and administrative support.

Thornton will provide leadership support to help CITPO achieve worldwide deployment of the Composite Health Care System II, the military's computer-based patient record, and reach Capability Maturity Model Level 2 certification.

Thornton said he is excited about joining an energetic company like Axiom and looks forward to the opportunities awaiting him in CITPO.

"Axiom has a reputation for delivering great client support, and is respected for the way they treat their people. I'm proud to join team Axiom, and look forward to providing outstanding support to the CITPO mission," said Thornton.

Prior to joining Axiom, Thornton was program manager for a fortune 50-level company. There he successfully implemented business processes for client clinical informatics programs. The improvements included both the Software Engineering Institute - Capabilities Maturity Model (SEI-CMM) and Code of Federal Regulation 21- Quality System Regulation. Through his efforts, Thornton assisted in the attainment of SEI-CMM Level 3 certification on the first attempt.

Thornton earned a M.S. in Administration and a B.A. in Health Care Administration and Planning/Business Administration.
