Axiom Wins Major Federal Accessibility Services Contract

June 1, 2004

Falls Church, VA . Axiom Resource Management, Inc. announced today it had been selected by the Department of Defense's (DoD), TRICARE Management Activity as the principal contractor to support the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP). The five-year contract is valued at approximately $9.1 million.

"This is a major victory for Axiom," said Doug Peardon, Axiom Partner. "We've supported CAP for the past four years, and CAP has helped make Axiom an industry leader in accessibility and disability services."

CAP offers federal agencies a wide range of disability accommodation services that assist federal employees with visual, auditory, dexterity, communication and cognitive disabilities to access the electronic and information technology environment. Although formally an office within DoD, the project is authorized by Congress to offer its services to any federal department and agency. Over the past 14 years of activity, CAP has provided over 38,000 accommodations and now handles approximately 5,000 requests each year from DoD and 58 other federal agencies.

"The Axiom team believes in the CAP mission and vision," said Axiom's CAP Project Manager Derek Shields. "We're excited about renewing our partnership with CAP in support of federal employees with disabilities. We'll continue working to create a more inclusive federal workforce and a society that provides independence and opportunities for all people - including people with disabilities."

Desktop personal computers and networks can be modified to accommodate the needs of employees with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities, enabling these employees to contribute their skills and talents to their organization's success. Screen magnifiers can help employees with deteriorating eyesight. Employees with problems moving their hands, for example, can be helped by adapting computers to respond to voice activated commands. CAP technicians assess each employee's request, determine what type of assistive technologies can address their needs, procure these tools and appropriate training from commercial vendors, and keep track of the government's assistive technology inventory.

With Axiom's help, CAP works to integrate assistive technologies into the federal government's mainstream information technology environment, and to ensure that these don't conflict with other computer applications or programs. Axiom's CAP support team provides program development, acquisition, information technology, marketing, training, administrative, and other services. One recent product created by CAP in partnership with Axiom, a CD-ROM entitled Real Solutions for Real Needs, has earned international recognition as an exemplary application of Flash digital technology and as an education and training tool.

"CAP is committed to helping government employees with disabilities do their jobs more efficiently, and with greater satisfaction," Peardon said in the award announcement. "Axiom is all about helping government leaders get the job done," he said, referring to the company's motto, "and we couldn't be more pleased by this award."
