Axiom Manager Conducts Leadership Training at West Point
April 15, 2003
Falls Church, Virginia. Axiom Resource Management, Inc. announced that one of its employees is scheduled to present lectures on Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point. David Maurer now serves as a Program and Technical Manager for Axiom overseeing 24 employees, but he is also a retired Army lieutenant colonel who has served in numerous command and staff positions throughout his career. His last military assignment was as West Point's 72nd Adjutant General.
Mr. Maurer will be the guest of the Academy's Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department in May, where he will speak about the challenges and opportunities facing today's military officers responsible for leading and developing non-military staff. He will make presentations to senior cadets about to be commissioned as second lieutenants and the cadre of Tactical Officers within the Corps of Cadets. He will also address the faculty as part of West Point's Officer Professional Development Program.
"This is a wonderful development," said Axiom Partner Kevin Riley. "Dave's a great guy, and this is an amazing opportunity for him to do something he loves. Teaching leadership at West Point is like teaching math at MIT or law at Harvard. It speaks highly of both Dave and Axiom to be invited to play such a role in the development of tomorrow's military leaders."
Maurer points out that the contemporary military environment increasingly relies on contractors and civilian employees. The likelihood of new officers leading civilians during their career is much higher than it used to be. According to Maurer, "Leading a team in the civilian world is not that different from leading in the military. Some basic principles apply universally, but knowing when and how to alter the approach to better fit the new audience is key. In its essential form," he says, "leadership is grounded in one's ability to motivate others. The enduring principle of military leadership most critical in today's corporate environment is that of leading by example."
Axiom Chief Operating Officer Doug Peardon says Maurer knows what he's talking about because he's done it from both sides. "Dave had a great record when he was in uniform and he's continued to exemplify quality leadership during his time with Axiom." Maurer is responsible for the program management support Axiom provides to the TRICARE Management Activity, the organization overseeing the military's healthcare program. He has staff in Falls Church, Virginia and Aurora, Colorado. Together, they have successfully managed more than 70 Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) over the last 3 and a half years, contributing directly to health-related enhancements for service-members and other eligible beneficiaries.
