Robinson Secondary Students Complete Axiom Internships
April 7, 2008
Falls Church, Virginia. Five students from Robinson Secondary School (Fairfax, Virginia) have completed a one-day business internship at Axiom Resource Management, Incorporated.
In September 2005, the Minority Students of Robinson (MSR) formed an academic-business partnership with Axiom. The program, known as "Robinson 555," has three components: five MSR students per year have the opportunity to complete one-day internships at Axiom; five students annually are invited to participate in an Axiom community-assistance effort; five students (one per year for five years) receive $1,000 college scholarships from Axiom.
Axiom hosted interns in four business areas: communications and marketing (Kristina Witcher and Jeffery Allen), human resources (Kaylan Celestin), accounting (Osman Dirie), and project management (Kay Onyekwere).
"Axiom is proud to host these outstanding students for internship training," said A. Douglas Peardon, Axiom partner. "I believe that when these young people see Axiom's professional workplace, and the way our people interrelate, the students will begin to visualize their future in such a positive place."
Axiom partner Kevin Riley agreed. "By taking the step of undergoing this internship, these five students have identified themselves as leaders of tomorrow. They have taken this early step to develop their abilities and their potential, and we are delighted to participate in their development."
The MSR interns received an Axiom "new employee orientation" briefing to start the day. After this overview of Axiom's business goals, products, and priorities, the interns went to work in their respective business areas. After a business lunch in Alexandria, the students returned to Axiom to complete their afternoon training sessions. Axiom's top executives met with the students for a roundtable question-and-answer session late in the day, and the internship concluded with the presentation of their internship certificates.
"I really enjoyed the experience of learning how to work in a group environment," said accounting intern Osman Dirie. "The staff was very helpful in teaching me how everything functions here at Axiom."
"Today was beneficial in helping me to understand that Human Resources is about more than just firing people," said human resources intern Kaylan Celestin. "Human Resources really cares about everyone working for Axiom!"
The interns contributed to the Axiom mission in tangible ways. For example, the communications and marketing interns helped write this news release for posting on the Axiom website.
Lynne Hicks, Director, Minority Students of Robinson program, thanked Axiom for providing this invaluable experience. "This is an outstanding opportunity for our students" she said, "and we thank the leadership of Axiom for making this internship possible."
